This summer Lisa Loomer’s timely, witty, and deeply human play takes us behind the headlines of Roe v. Wade. This is the story of the complex people at the center of a legal landmark and a battle for autonomy that is far from over.

It’s a spectacular adventure about escape, friendship, and finding where you belong is brought to life by SSC Associate Artistic Director, Lexi Balaoing. Beginning in September and available for field trip performances at Tybee Post Theater!

BLACKBIRD by David Harrower

From the fierce pen of David Harrower comes a play that won the Olivier Award. Fifteen years of silence, broken in a office breakroom. This is what happens when the past demands to be heard. Coming this April during Sexual Abuse Awareness Month to The Sentient Bean, join Shawna Peña-Downing as they make their SSC directorial debut.

Savannah Stage Company believes in transparency and care. The following information is provided to help you make informed choices about your experience with our production of Blackbird.

This production contains:

  • Discussion of Child Sexual Abuse: The entire play is a confrontation about a past abusive relationship.

  • Depiction of Power Dynamics: The play depicts psychological manipulation and the lasting impact of trauma.

  • Language: Strong language and explicit discussions of a sexual relationship with a minor.

  • Unseen Action: The past sexual acts are discussed, not depicted.

  • Staged Violence: Brief, intense moments of physical struggle and throwing of objects.

Content Advisory:

Blackbird does not depict sexual violence onstage, but the dialogue contains explicit descriptions of the past relationship between a woman and a middle-aged man fifteen years after he sexually abused her when she was twelve and its aftermath. The work is may be distressing for some audience members.

Blackbird is presented during Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) to raise awareness, educate our community, and prevent sexual violence. Materials on trauma-informed care and survivor support will be available in the lobby.
